Some of our business learners recently received the chance to visit the Barclaycard office, in London, to learn more about employment in the banking sector and explore various interview techniques.
Four groups, of 12 students each, were selected as a result of their attendance merit at the College. Participants included 16- to 18-year-olds from our BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate Business (delivered at Lewisham Way) and BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma Business (Lewisham Way and Waterloo) programmes. Adults on the BTEC Level 5 HND Marketing course (in Lewisham Way) also attended.
Accompanied by course tutors, each group attended a two-hour session delivered by Barclaycards’ volunteers. This included various individual/group tasks and covered topics such as:
• Career development plans
• How Barclaycard plan recruitment using internal and external sources
• Interview techniques
• Skills and competencies required for banking jobs
“This experience has inspired our learners in choosing accounting and banking degree courses,” said Sue Hughes.
“They have used this on their UCAS personal statement to enable entry to possible Russell group universities. It has clearly helped with their interviewing skills, as a number of them have secured Christmas part-time jobs.”
Those taking part wore formal clothes and travelled to the venue (on the 30th floor of Barclaycards’ building in the City) by DLR, so they could get a real feel of the London commute.
