Psychiatric Nurse, Priscilah Gicheru, studied her Level 3 BTEC in Health & Social Care at Lewisham Southwark College.
Here’s what she had to say about her career and how college helped her get where she is today.
“Whilst at Lewisham Southwark College, my intention was just to complete my diploma in Health and Social Care and then start looking for jobs related to the course,” said Priscilah. “However my lecturers at the time (in particular Ayanna) greatly encouraged me to apply for an undergraduate course at university.
“With constant motivation and rationale from the lecturers, I got into university (a decision that I’m now proud of) and I’m forever indebted for their overall support in this and for the college having the best lecturers and quality education!
“Being at Lewisham Southwark College definitely helped me to be where I am today. I gained confidence through class presentations and placements. I gained research and analytical skills through completing assignments and by taking all the feedback offered by lecturers in a positive way at all times,” she said.
Priscilah told our Alumni Team more about her role as a Psychiatric Nurse too.
“My main role as a mental health nurse is to offer support, plan interventions and generally nursing individuals with a diverse range of mental health problems,” she explained.
Although Priscilah says it’s a challenge dealing with aggression form some of the people in her care, it’s all worth it in the end.
“My proudest moments are seeing and supporting individuals through their recovery journey,” she said.
So what’s next for Priscilah?
“My goal is to do a masters degree at some point,” she said. “Over the next few years I want to become even more knowledgeable in my career pathway and to continue offering nursing care to the best of my abilities.
“It’s so important to give your personal best in any job you undertake!”
