The mature student spoke to our Alumni team about her decision to take an Adult Learning course, and what she plans to do with her new qualification.
Roma came to London in 2010 from Romania, where she had previously undertaken supervisory roles in the hospitality industry. She started as a Floor Supervisor for a hotel, and has since climbed to her current position at Aramark.
“I try to practice what I learned on my college course,” she said, “I want to find a job where I can have more opportunity to practice my knowledge, experience and education as a Manager.
“l always wanted this career, I enjoy to work with people and l love to lead people. The Management and Leadership course at Lewisham Southwark College led me to understand much better my skills and to expand my knowledge”
Working at Aramark has given Nona the opportunity to move from the hotel industry and gain experience working in a mental health hospital. She told us what it was like making the transition.
“To work in a mental health hospital, you have to put your heart first, to treat people like you want to be treated,” said Nona. “Working in a mental health hospital, it’s a great opportunity to understand better the problems which come from mental illness.
“My current job involves Checking the standards of cleaning and food hygiene training, ordering materials, interacting with the patients, food audits, having meetings with the client and company management, and community meetings with services users.”
So, what does the future hold for Nona?
“In five years’ time, I want to be running my own company,” said our ambitious alumnus.
