Max King is a second-year student, studying a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Performing Arts at Lewisham Southwark College.
“I completed sixth-form study in dance, performance studies, art and English literature, and, after deferring my university place in art for two years, realised that art wasn’t for me. I wanted something more practical. I joined this course after five years of small acting jobs, realising I needed to go back and learn about the industry and gain mores skills in order to be successful.
“I continue to work alongside my studies, though – the day before this interview, I was working on an advert using a green screen where I was many characters, including an astronaut.
“The programme is hard work, but I’m up for it. The teaching here is inspiring, passionate and dedicated. It’s a really friendly environment and I’m not going to top-up my degree after this, as I feel I’ll have enough skills on my CV and I want to get working again.
“My top tip is to know roughly what area of performing arts you want to go into, as you can then hone your skills on the course whilst realising how it works in the bigger picture – which is vital to success.”
