Laura Rawlins: “I received a tremendous amount of support and assistance that was needed due to my dyslexia,” says Fashion graduate

Laura studied a BTEC in Fashion at Lewisham Southwark College. Now a Machinist at Zippy Stitch, Laura is one step closer to achieving her dream of being a Fashion Designer. She spoke to our Alumni Team about her journey so far.

“The greatest challenge I’ve faced is finding out I was dyslexic,” said Laura. “Lewisham Southwark College helped me greatly with my disability. My English improved greatly whilst I was at college. My organisation as a whole is a lot better and I think my time at college prepared me for my time at university where I lived independently for a number of years.

“During my time at Lewisham Southwark College I received a tremendous amount of support and assistance that was needed due to dyslexia. I was able to improve my English and punctuality skills with consistent feedback from my tutors. Not only was I able to improve my academic learning at college, I was also able to build on life and social skills.”

After graduating from Lewisham Southwark College, Laura was offered a place studying Menswear at the University for Creative Arts.

“My proudest achievement was obtaining my degree,” said Laura. “I found it incredibly difficult due to my dyslexia.”

Nevertheless, Laura achieve a lot during her degree.

“I built up a number of industry contacts while at the university,” she said. “My chosen path way of ‘Branding’ in my final year introduced me to the understanding of brand identity and how to transfer a label’s design niche into a new collection. I was required to create a number of Tec-packs and built experience meeting manufactures and guiding them through a construction process to assemble a number of finished garments. The final outfits were styled by myself.

“I’ve recently started my job as a Machinist. My role also requires tailoring skills. I have to alter garments to a customers’ specification and I also have to work the till and work out how much alterations will cost in total,” she said.

“My ultimate goal is to set up my own fashion label, which I am currently working towards.”
