She is now at Goldsmiths University of London studying a BSC (Hons) in Business Computing and Entrepreneurship. The degree will give Coreen the technical skills she needs to work in the modern creative technologies and digital media industries.
Coreen agreed to speak to our Alumni Team about life at university and how the access course at Lewisham Southwark College helped her to achieve her goals.
“Completing an Access to Computing course at LSC has given me good foundational skills that have been very useful in my first year at university,” said Coreen. “The research skills and exam preparation has been particularly useful.”
The Access to Higher Education (Computing) course is designed to help those who have either been away from education for a while, or don’t yet have the qualifications needed to apply for a degree-level course, or both, to get up to speed. As well as completing modules on Computer Programming; Administering Windows 7 and Server 2008; Networking Fundamentals; Routing and Switching Basics; WANs; Web Authoring Software; Web Development and Management; Algebra, Statistics and Trigonometry; Operating Systems; Research Projects; and Examination Skills, students learn the soft skills necessary to succeed at university level.
These soft skills were particularly useful to Coreen who said: “Getting used to the volume of the work and the level of knowledge that is required at university, whilst juggling a family, is a challenge.”
Coreen said that the highlight of university for her is “meeting different people with different backgrounds,” and she had some advice to share with others hoping to progress to university like herself.
“Keep striving, go to all of your lessons, complete all of your assignments and ask advice from your teachers when you need help, this will help you reach your goal of going to university, ” she said.
Coreen is hoping to start several successful businesses with her new skills in the near future.
